PULASKI COUNTY, Ark. -- Two Pulaski County Special School District high schools are set to receive additional funding from the Arkansas Department of Education Career and Technical Education State Start-up Grants. These funds are to assist with the development of new CTE programs at each school.
Joe T. Robinson High School will receive $26,877 for CS: Programming. Sylvan Hills High School will receive $31,956.67 for Sports Medicine.
"We are very appreciative of the opportunity to improve our Computer Science program here at Robinson High School,” said Business Teacher, Mr. Larry Smith. “These students are so deserving of the proper equipment to challenge them to reach their coding goals. I want to thank the Arkansas Department of Education and Pam Black [Director of Career Education for PCSSD] for recognizing the potential in our students. We will be good stewards of these funds and accept them with humble thanks. Go Senators!"
“This Career and Technical Education State Start-up Grant will greatly assist with the development of the Sports Medicine Program for the students of Sylvan Hills High School,” said Sylvan Hills High Principal Mr. Tracy Allen. “This is the first year that we have offered Sports Medicine to our students and this grant will allow us to provide the needed equipment for an effective Sports Medicine program at our school. The grant will supply life-saving equipment such as CPR and AED equipment for student training purposes. Additionally, our students will receive equipment that will aid them in their training and care of sports injuries and prevention. Sylvan Hills High School is excited to have a fully functioning Sports Medicine program as a program of study in our Biomedical career pathway.”
Nearly $2.5 million in grants are being awarded to 72 programs statewide. The start-up grants cover 85 percent of the costs associated with a new program, with the school district committing to cover the remaining 15 percent.
