covid-19

As concerns about the coronavirus continue to increase, school districts in Arkansas are taking precautions should there be an outbreak in the Natural State.

So far there haven't been any confirmed COVID-19 cases in Arkansas, but if that changes, those with the Pulaski County Special School District say they're prepared.

"Number one, please wash your hands," parent Shentia Russell said.

Russell said she and her son, a student at Mills High School in Pulaski County, are doing their best not to spread germs.

"I would hope a parent would not send their child to school sick," she said.

Pulaski County Special School District Superintendent Charles McNulty said they are paying close attention to the latest developments.

"We need to know what the information is," he said. "We need to listen to the CDC, and the local and state health departments."

He said what's being suggested to keep schools germ free, is pretty much common practice.

"We're pushing hand washing, he said. "I know that is a big impact on curbing the disease itself."

District officials say Clorox 360 disinfectant machines were recently purchased to deep clean every school.

"We're bringing the equipment through those common areas like doorknobs, water fountains, and the gym," Exec. Director of Communications for PCSSD Jessica Duff said.

As the district tries to stay on the forefront, parents like Russell say she's relieved.

"It makes me comforted that they’re not waiting," she said. "They are utilizing what they need to do in an effort to not get [the virus]," she said.

School officials remind parents to keep their kids at home if they are sick.
